Gitanyow Wilp Sustainability is the principle and Ayookxw (law) linked to Gwelx ye’enst. This principle or law is the right and responsibility of the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs to pass on the Lax’yip (territory) in a sustainable manner from one generation to the next.

Drawing on our ancestral knowledge, principles, and laws, Wilp Sustainability is enacted today through various plans, policies, and programs of the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs, the Gitanyow Fisheries Authority, and the Gitanyow Lax’yip Guardians.

The Gitanyow Lax’yip Land Use Plan (GLLUP) was negotiated between the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs and the provincial government of British Columbia over 10 years, culminating in 2012 with the Gitanyow Huwilp Recognition & Reconciliation Agreement.

The Gitanyow Wilp Sustainability Assessment Process was developed over three years by the Hereditary Chiefs with legal support from the West Coast Environmental Law RELAW program.

Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs staff have merged Gitanyow Ayookxw with water quality and quantity data to create a draft Gitanyow Lax’yip Water Policy. The intent is to establish watershed-specific standards that anyone undertaking activities within the Lax’yip must adhere to.
